History & Biography

The group from Ljungskile, Sweden was Desiderius in 1990 before becoming Runemagic for three years before again changing monickers to its permanent one after four years of inactivity. The sound also changed from death metal to death/doom along with the change in monickers. The act disbanded between 2007 and 2015 before doing the time-honoured tradition of returning. The group itself considers this a break and not a disbandment. Founder Nicklas Rudolfsson has been the sole original member for the longest time.

The debut album of 1998 was on Century Media and featured the duo of Nicklas Rudolfsson and Fredrik Johnsson. Producer Fredrik Nordström contributed keyboards. The album was essentially a compilation of demo songs. Nicklas Rudolfsson was a member of Sacramentum, which was already on Century Media. Johan Norman, who would go on to join Dissection, was a guitarist for the band in 1992 and 1993 and part of the first live crew for Runemagick. The band had almost signed with a US label that was found out as being a rip off. Bassist Peter Palmdahl (Dissection) had come and gone in a flash in 1997. Earlier, singer Robert Pehrsson had stayed for two years after joining in 1991. Albums two and three were recorded with Andy LaRocque. Aftermath Music of Norway released a 7" called Ancient Incantations for the band in 2001. There was a demo called Sepulchral Realms in the same year. This was a signal that the band was not on Century Media any longer. Moreover, Requiem Of The Apocalypse added bassist Emma Rudolfsson and drummer Daniel Moilanen. The Moon Of The Chaos Eclipse EP was a shortened version of the full-length on vinyl. Guitarist Tomas Eriksson (Grotesque) joined, but did not stay. Nonetheless, he was part of the line-up that climbed the stage at Inferno Festival in Norway. A strictly limited edition audio DVD was called Darkness Death Doom to go with the album of the same name. The band ceased rehearsing in 2005, which would lead to a cessation of all activity soon. Fredrik Johnsson was gone and the act was a trio. Dawn Of The End was licensed by Enucleation Records for the USA. The act hung up its instruments for ten, or so, years. A couple of the members grouped in Heavydeath in the meanwhile.

Curse Of The Dark Rune was a 2015 demo that stemmed from the band's early days actually. Another rerelease was the Hymn Of Darkness demo. Surprisingly, the 2018 return album was also on Aftermath Music. Even more surprising was how the album featured the same threesome. The group was booked for Killtown Death Fest 2018. Into Desolate Realms, however, moved to High Roller. Jonas Blom was added as a second guitarist although he had joined as a drummer in the late 1990s and was road tested before becoming permanent. That did not last and Beyond The Cenotaph Of Mankind was on Hammerheart. It had been recorded over the previous several years. Hammerheart had also rereleased the band's earlier work. Moilanen was a concert guest for Bloodbath in 2022. Older material reemerged in the form of the Last Skull Of Humanity EP of 2023. It was actually demo material for the group's second record, Enter The Realm Of Death. The band was working on a new album in late 2024.

For its tenure, the band's line-up has been relatively stable. That does not mean that the members have been dedicated and have, in fact, jumped in and out of projects like all Swedes do. Emma and Nicklas are married.
