History & Biography
Sabbat, or サバト, was called Evil (with guitarist Ozny and drummer Valvin) in early to mid-1983 before switching its monicker to Sabbat in 1984. Toshiya had handled the vocals in Evil, but Sabbat featured Gezol on the mike. Except for Ozny, the band members had been playing together at school bands since 1981. The black/thrash band with Venom and Bathory influences was based in the unlikely locale of Mie prefecture in central Japan. Gezol, who is Samm's brother, founded Evil Records however, which became the platform for the release of the group's music before the group switched mainly to H.M.S.S. after that label's founding at the very end of the century. The band has been consistently prolific since and even managed to double up through a side-project called Metalucifer (which was the name for a Sabbat song). Live records, splits (including a couple with Metalucifer), compilations and, in later years, live DVDs have complemented the studio records. The act appeared in a battle of the bands and duly lost of course. The group appeared at the Under The Castle festival in 1986, a show that was televised. The aforementioned castle was Nagoyajo in Nagoya. The brothers announced a cessation of live activities because "of a death in the family" in 1987, but were back by 1989 thrashing the stage and audiences live twice. A 1987 farewell gig was attended by 43 people nevertheless. Singer Possessed Hammer and guitarist Barraveat were in the band for one gig respectively in 1989. Drummer Samm, however, departed in 1990, which meant the band was absent from stages in that year. Zorugelion joined and has stuck with it ever since. The band was in Germany for a gig in 1991. With that not materializing, the members instead did some publicity for the band while in Europe. The members have often performed semi-nude.

There were several demos and singles, Born By Evil Blood, Desecration, Bloody Countess: Bride Of The Demon, The Devil's Sperm Is Cold, etc., until 1990. Elizaveat was on guitar until 1991. His brother Atsushi would incidentally join Sabbat in 2016.

Envenom was the debut full-length and released in 1991. Zorugelion was on drums. Iron Pegasus Records and Hells Headbangers would end up rereleasing early albums a decade or so later. Envenom was reissued by RIP Records in the USA in 2004. Evoke featured Temis Osmond. He would stay until 2005. The F.E.T.U. fanzine printed an issue dedicated to, and filled with, Sabbat in 1993. Live At Blokula was a 10th anniversary live record with a pressing of 666. A 10th anniversary gig had featured former guitarist Ozny and former drummer Samm returning as guests. Holycaust Record from the USA released a MCD entitled Sabbatical Devilucifer, which became the trio's first release outside of Japan. Regardless, the live release opened the floodgates to a slew of live releases.

The Dwelling contained one track. Live Devil was issued through H.M.S.S. (Heavy Metal Super Star) better known for releasing Abigail's material. Live Kindergarden (sic) showed the band has a sense of humour. The VenoMetal album of 2000 was released through Sons Of Satan. There was a label in south Asia working with the band using the same name years later. VenoMetal contained old Venom cover versions performed by Evil. Charisma, a 2000 full-length, was the English version of Karisma. The Karisma album focused on Japanese culture and event featured the traditional instrument koto. Russian Harmageddon was not taped in Russia or the Soviet Union (as the cover suggested). Far East Sabbatical Live Attack!!! featured more older material including songs from the 10th anniversary show. Live Nuts proved the band has a sexy side to it. The record was so kinky the band repressed it as Live Festa. The band had toured Europe in 2000 and subsequently multiple live records leveraged the recordings in 2001. Worldwide tours became the norm. Sabbatrinity contained a self-cover version. Between 2003 and 2011 the band had issued a cadre of monthly curiosities. Live Sabbatical Hamaguri Queen featured a recording from the band's 20th anniversary tour from 2004. Tribute To Temis immortalised that man's last concert with the band. Sabbatrinity featured Gezol, Zorugelion and guitarist Ishida Satoshi. Similarly, while a flood of demos, EPs and compilations attacked the planet between 2011 and 2024 it was only in the latter year when a new full-length studio record emerged. Ishida was Tokyo-based, which meant the band rehearsed less and placed less emphasis on new music. The focus was on touring and live releases. As the final part of the Dutch/Japanese trilogy, Pentacle and Sabbat had a split release in 2018. A tour of Mexico was cancelled when the promoter stiffed the band in 2019. The group was booked for Keep It True XXIII in 2020, which was cancelled of course. The group toured Europe with Gruesome as its opener in 2024. The band was in Colombia at the end of 2024 and also announced several USA gigs. Anniversaries of all sorts were all the rage worldwide and so Sabbat was conducting a 41st anniversary tour of Japan (and Muskelrock in Sweden and gigs in Finland and Germany) in 2025. The Black Fire Over Spain Tour was scheduled for October of 2026. Sabbat, Metalucifer and Bulldozer were booked for a show in Greece called Metal Without Mercy fest also in October of 2026.

The band has had decent support outside Japan and certainly been productive. Add the output of Metalucifer and the group's output breaks records. Given that, and the longevity, the line-up has not changed all that much despite Gezol being the sole original member left. There are several tribute albums to Sabbat out there. The group itself has covered Venom, Jurassic Jade and more. Interestingly, the UK-based Sabbat was founded only a year after the Japanese maniacs and was also influenced by Venom to start. 'Sol' and 'Gel' are solutions and particle states and present in bodies and nature. The combination forms the basis for the main man's pseudonym. Sabbat has called its style 'blacking metal.'
