Emerging as one of the best post-Gothenburg melodic death bands with its 2006 debut Caress The Despair, Shades Of Dusk has imposingly returned with another impressive effort, Quiescene. Muscling up its sound considerably since the debut, Shades Of Dusk is now is a more potent force and uses said strength to its advantage: though not metalcore and steadfastly melodic death, Quiescene nonetheless benefits from its burly approach. It’s hard to believe this band hasn’t toured Europe extensively, because tracks like Inertia... And The Aftermath, Frailty By Design and The Celebration Of Vile Procedures are just so high-tier, evoking the classics of Gothenburg while also expanding the subgenre into this decade’s version of the acerbic. - David Perri
