SOURVEIN - EMERALD VULTURE - THIS DARK REIGN
"written and recorded... in 5 days" now that cannot be a good sign can it? The band should be given points for honesty either way. Even the mighty Motörhead is known to write lyrics and music in the last minute and not many people complain about Lemmy's output so it might not be fair to Sourvein to question its music - at least not before hearing them out.
The MCD is comprised of four tracks and is nominally just shy of thirty minutes, but in reality album closer Heart Of Ebon is mostly one long exercise in static and noise. Having said that, the rest of the green bird is bursting with Eyehategod-meets-Saint Vitus chaotic doom. The bass pumps out massive doses distortion, the guitar is inconsequential and the singer sounds like he was simultaneously drowning in the swamp and dropping acid while recording his lines. Tightness be damned; there is something liberating about Sourvein. It is punky for sure, noise definitely and seriously loud. This is the first three EPs the label intends to unleash upon humanity. We will suffer the consequences either way. - Ali "The Metallian"
