SPUN IN DARKNESS - BIRTHRIGHT - BATTLE KOMMAND
Spun In Darkness is a new name to most of us. The group features Jeff Nardone the drummer of the early '90s Las Vegas band Goatlord. If anyone was hoping for anything phenomenal or revolutionary out of the mouth or stick of Nardone those hopes will be dashed. Instead, Birthright resurrects very old school death metal from the late '80s mixing early Obituary riffs and a doom/death vibe not unlike Cianide. The songs are not super tight and typically played at a medium pace. These simple songs are almost no-frill and have an average production with the drums probably a tad too muddy. In contrast, the guitars are sharp and the group dispenses with the usual horse manure that most other bands blend into their heavy metal. Gory and horror lyrics are par for the course, which is no surprise after the scary intro. Reborn Dead’s lyrics are a total of 13 words but as a bonus are enhanced by a spider in the booklet.
Birthright was originally meant to be issued by Invocation Records, but with that label biting the dust of reality Battle Kommand has picked this up and given it a release. - Anna Tergel
