STEIGNYR – MYTHS THROUGH THE SHADOWS OF FREEDOM – ART GATES
Folk metal bands do not have too many takers at Metallian Towers. Clearly they are not children of purity. Steignyr styles itself Celtic folk metal, but ironically is based in Spain. Then again, this is no different than Germanic French bands or Grave Digger being Scottish in its head, etc.
Steignyr has a rather long and varied album here. The problem right off the bat is that while tracks like You’ll Never Be Forgotten or Frozen In Time have moments of genuine metal at other times the music sounds like a hobbit could waltz in and begin dancing to it without even a moment’s notice. Also distasteful is the drum machine. It is some of the monotonous and artificial sounding backdrops one would hear.
Elsewhere, the band utilizes multiple vocal layers and styles. It tries its hand at multiple vocals as it does at multiple styles. A track begins with a Running Wild riff and another takes us to pop melodies.
Other than that the druid on the cover is enigmatic and generally speaks to artwork a metal fan would adore. Celtic folk metal fans should not hesitate. Metal fans tread with caution. – Ali “The Metallian”
