STONELAKE - UNCHARTED SOULS - UMP
Stonelake is such a find! My first or second listens were not so hot, but boy am I glad I stuck with these guns. The more one listens, the better this damn thing sounds. Care for '80s metal? Love hard rock with loud riffs? Do you like Judas Priest were they mixing up Turbo with Painkiller? Stonelake is for you!
The band’s roots date back to 1984 and two unknown groups named Ravage and Whitelight. Those bands went away, but the members regrouped recently and during the autumn of 2007 recorded a full-length full of hooks, solos, melodies and bombastic drums to very good effect. Unfortunately, the band uses and overuses the keyboards. The resulting sound is watered down, although the thick rhythms, loud banging and the dual-vocals, which so reek of Rob Halford-meets-sleaze, end up making the album work. Fans of everything from new Edguy to Judas Priest and Annihilator will sure appreciate this. Too bad the four Swedes have lost the hair that would have added image to music. Guys with long manes are so delicious. - Sheila Wes Det
