Reviews SUNLIGHT - SON OF THE SUN - METAL SCRAP
Keyboards dominate this sophomore album, a full nine years since the band's debut. The almost nasal vocals of Mike Karasoulis are also another feature that jumps out at the listener with an accent discernable as well. The so-called melodic power metal style reminds of the likes of Dragonforce and Stratovarius, a generous comparison might also mention Pretty Maids but the band rarely gets there. There is a little here that can also bring out the symphonic characterization. The guitars by Makis Kaponisdo feature well enough to preserve some metal aspects for these nine songs. The song titles and the lyrics are all about relationships and love. The commercial viability of the band is high but the scene is not lacking bands that attempt to mix (a bit too much) melody with things more heavy metal. The songs are not very differentiable which means that Son Of The Sun is not exactly filled with ballads with only Secret Of Silence really slowing it down to the acoustic with lines like "Holding my tears away...why you make me feel this way." Sunlight makes a good attempt at a tearjerker that would be a somewhat good fit among 80s ballads. The song comes complete with a few screams and a guitar solo reminiscent of the songs of the aforementioned era. Not unexpectedly the song that follows the ballad picks up the pace somewhat. Echoes Of Hope makes a case for the power metal tag but the keyboards certainly remain as prominent as ever. Perhaps paradoxically the closer is called Sunrise. - Anna Tergel
