Reviews SYMPTOMEN - MEN AGAINST MEN - DIEFIGHT
Heavy metal the way heavy metal was supposed to be: Symptomen. Imagine one’s surprise when album after album is the same old melodic hot air when heavy metal or, worse, just some non-metal keyboard-laden entity. Either way it is a case of boredom or misrepresentation. No two ways about it, but somewhere along the lines 'metal' bands lost the plot and either confused metal with poppy pufferina (helllllloooo Finland) or misunderstood the whole concept and began pushing 'melody' as some kind of an advantage or feature - as opposed to embarrassment or impediment.
Metal is alive however. Symptomen proves it. Who? I know! What?? Who knows.
These guys deliver heavy metal that emphasizes heavy + metal over stupid melodicrity complete with ripping leads, galloping riffs, sharp riff, obligatory ballad (yes, I know) and lyrics that take the fight to injustice instead of the clichéd nationalistic crap younger deluded bands promote. For all this writer knows this band is young as well, but they sure don’t let that become handicap. This is heavy metal released today that sounds like yesterday, tried, true and appreciated.
Poisoned World is the ballad, but has cool leads and Demean begins with a Rocketellica riff that is best forgotten and is (by us and the band), but the rest of this damn thing is so thoroughly metal one wants to raise the fist of the metal child and kick it to the axe.
“World lost in blood/Money is worth more than life,” or “The biggest country/Assaults and destroys the small” sings the band as metal delivers the good. - Ali “The Metallian”
