Reviews THE DEVIANT - RAVENOUS DEATHWORSHIP - CANDLELIGHT
Dissection, Hate Eternal, Immortal, Dark Funeral... are you foaming at the mouth yet? The Deviant combines aspects of all the aforementioned, plus its own ideas, to create a brilliantly serious death-worship.
The most notable and absorbing element on the album is the acerbic guitar tone of E.N. Death and Violator. The damn things deliver a sound akin to the vibrations of barbed wire - in the name of Satan. The drumming gets a tad generic during the blasts, although there is more than enough variety and fitting rhythms here to assuage the most critical of ears. The vocals of Dolgar come across as similar to Immortal during the 2000 - 2002 period and establish and anchor the evil vibe. Check out the growl at the beginning of Sadosadistic (a song so brutal it needed to repeat its intention) and tell me it didn’t make your hair stand on end.
No one expects anything but the most cutting-edge death metal from a band with song titles like Merciless, Genocide and Intimate Skinning, but when the depraved cries of “I hate you”... pour from the speakers the outcome is unmistakeable. Who knows, perhaps the band was onto more than just a song title when it named a song Perfect State Of Death? - Anna Tergel
