THE NOCTAMBULANT – THE COLD AND FORMLESS DEEP – ART GATES
Two things need to be dealt with before delving into a review of the album. Firstly, this band is American. It is not what one expects listening to the dynamic and intelligent music. Secondly, the act does not have a drummer and uses a dull drum machine. The act loses marks just for that stupidity and very nearly received a seventy rating from Metallian for it.
The Noctambulant is a dynamic, exciting and original death metal band that should be catapulted to newer heights just by virtue of this album. There is a speed, calculated brutality and heaviness to this band that few others can match its combination. The main vocalist and his backing comrades deliver on the microphone with roars and growls, while the instrumentalists showcase an act composing its own ferocity. Certainly shades of Satyricon and Necrophobic come across the speakers and smash the listeners’ ears, but this band walks the night on its own terms. Morietur Solus is dynamic, Valkyrie is a riff monster and pulls out the distorted bass, Immortal is speed metal supreme with a venomous vocal, the title track is brilliant and sports a backward track, My Dark Desires slays as it closes the album. This band has the riffs and compositions to compete with the best out there. It is a pity that – in addition to the drum machine – the production is dull and suppresses a band that can deliver in the vocal, song, lead guitar and power departments. The Cold And Formless Deep Melted the adjoining albums, which is a reason to get your clutches on the record. – Ali “The Metallian”
