TOTENMOND - VATERCHEN FROST - MASSACRE
Germany kicks off my new year with a surprise left over for review from 1997. I wonder why I never bothered to explore Totenmond, but suffice to say that the situation is now rectified. Serving as the follow-up to their only full-length album Lichtbringer (yes, it is all in German), the current EP's appearance, as well as the band's bio, the trio's tours with Atrocity and Orphanage and the album's mastering by the former band's Alex Krull had me certain that Totenmond is a pop act. That is until the guitar tone hits. Boom, the walls caved in. Mixing elements of Winter, Disembowelment and Cianide, the trio throws one heavy riff after the other at the listener. The vocals of guitarist Pazzer sometimes remind one of Sodom's, but that might have something to do with the man's accent. In any case, if you likes bands with smoking distortion pedals then your album has arrived. - Ali "The Metallian"
