TWISTED INTO FORM - THEN COMES AFFLICTION TO AWAKEN THE DREAMER - SENSORY
Twisted Into Form is the younger band of two former Spiral Architect members, singer Leif Knashaug and guitarist Kaj Gornitzka, former Lunaris bassist Erik Aadland and Extol tomboy David Husvik. Consequently, no prizes will be awarded for guessing the direction of the band’s first ever album. Then Comes Affliction To Awaken The Dreamer (a philosophical quote par excellence) is a techno metal thumping with shades of progressive metal and art school rock.
The first couple of songs, namely Enter Nothingness and Instinct Solitaire, hint at latter day Death. In fact, had Chuck Schuldiner and company continued and further regressed down the path of technicality one could imagine music like heard here would have been the result. Even the oddly industrial Manumit hints at Death. Other names that meander and plot an intricate path to mind are Spiral Architect (obviously), Cynic, Into Eternity and Forbidden. The latter, of course, refers to the band’s name, which is identical to the Bay Area thrashers’ second album which was released in 1990. Speaking of similarities in titles the album presents a few. Enter Nothingness hints at Voivod, while Coda obviously is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin.
While the music is an acquired taste (or mind) the voice of vocalist Leif will hardly ever be mentioned in superlative terms. He has an adequate voice and expresses himself well, but simultaneously clearly strains under pressure. The band - although this is natural for the given style - has an instrumental and many segments devoid of vocals.
Ultimately, Twisted Into Form is the perfect name of r the band and its vision. The warped music and the multi-layered lyrics speak to that. Fans of technical rock and metal take heed. - Ali “The Metallian”
