URKRAFT - ETERNAL COSMIC SLAUGHTER - CARTEL
Urkraft does not impress one much because the band’s riffs sound like an At The Gates-lite. The music and the riffing is not exactly the same of course, but the contrast is as wide as the title of At The Gates’ album Slaughter Of The Soul and Urkraft’s (coincidentally meaning 'ancient power') Eternal Cosmic Slaughter title. With the wild wailing atop of the music, the riffs and drumming somehow reminiscing the aforenamed Swedes and a washed up keyboard appearance Urkraft is not about to win too many brownie points at Metallian Towers. From the guitar riffs on Paint The City Black to the drum and tom fills on Soulless this smacks of Gothenburg’s finest done all over. Speaking of Soulless it is not difficult to read too much into Urkraft’s unoriginal song titles. Paint The City Black could be Paint It Black (Rolling Stones), while the title track is reminiscent of At The Gates and Soulless was a Grave album and song title of course.
For Urkraft to succeed it needs to replace genuine energy with its current ploy of going through the motions, banish the keyboards in favour of more guitars and include a couple of impressive guitar lead or ten that would rock the listeners’ socks off. Unleash The Will has a solo that could serve as the template, but needed to be longer. Those would improve the band’s ratings from 'below average' for starters. - Ali “The Metallian”
