Reviews URN - SOUL DESTROYERS - DYNAMIC ARTS
Less likely to be heard out of Finland than most anywhere else is Urn. The style here is closest to '80s thrash metal. It is given a few injections of black metal but that has as much to with the image of the band as the music itself. Old style thrash abounds here taking the listener back to early Kreator (Tormentor), Destruction, Hellhammer and Sodom. Ten songs with titles like Legions United, Decibel Hellstorm and Strike Of Conqueror give an idea what Soul Destroyers is about. When getting the aforementioned hints of what could be loosely called black metal one imagines how Marduk could have sounded in their demo days, sort of a precursor to Dark Endless. One example of the possible Marduk sound is the opening seconds of In Darkness...The Fire. Plenty of pure thrash moments in the 46 minutes of Soul Destroyers and when (Bringer Of) Pain Agony And Death and Black Steel Worship are in high speed mode Urn are as capable as most any band to bang heads. A slight variation is presented in the opening seconds of Blood Of The Desecrators when the trio seems to remember they are from Finland but very quickly snaps out of it. - Anna Tergel
