Reviews WINTERLONG - same - LION
Winterlong is a little different than most of the albums being released nowadays by the labels in the metal scene and that is a good thing. The band's output has both its positive and negative aspects though. Beginning with the positive the Swedes have an edge with their singer and lead guitarist. The singer has a clear and strong voice which lends the band a certain Skid Row-meets-Stratovarius vibe. The lead guitarist has swift fingers and uses them to create Classical leads and heavy riffs. Notwithstanding those the band has not much less working for it. The songs are almost bare bone and bear not much of a intricacy. It is like the songs all lack a little something. The rhythm guitar, for instance, is almost inaudible. So is the bass guitar. Winterlong might have great vocals and solos, but a great band needs great arrangements and a potent rhythm section. Nevertheless, Winterlong's hard rocking power is good and fans of the aforenamed two bands and even a heavier Europe might really like the album. - Sheila Wes Det
