WITHOUT GRIEF - ABSORBING THE ASHES - SERIOUS
Two indirect points regarding the Swedes at hand before the body of the review are necessary. Firstly, has anyone out there heard of this band previous to this sophomore album? No cheers to the person/ label in charge of promoting the band's debut, that's certain! Secondly, charged by the punchy production of Serious Entertainment boss Jacob Hansen, it seems that every single Serious release has big guitars, up front vocals and punchy drums. Moving ahead, and past the dull and cliché cover, WG are a good death and thrash band which can best be described as equal parts Edge of Sanity, metal-era Desultory and even Arch Enemy. It's true, a little of those bands resides within Absorbing the Ashes. Noteworthy moments are the Unleashed riff at the beginning and end of opener Kingdom of Hatred, the cool solos on both Instrumental (yup, you guessed it) and Only Darkness Lies Ahead and the powerful riffs throughout. While not the biggest revelation of the year, Without Grief are surely another strong contender from the northern kingdom. - Ali "The Metallian"
