Reviews WWIII - WHEN GOD TURNED AWAY - REALITY
WWIII is Mandy Lion. Mandy Lion is WWIII. WWIII's first album, from the early 90's had one line-up, the band's new album features one set of musicians, lists another and the band's current live line-up has again been modified. The one constant is singer Mandy Lion. gauge
Less obvious is the music of WWIII. The band is heavier than the band's image or its musicians' pasts let on. This is pure hard rock/heavy metal with a sound all its own. When Gods Turned Away's trademark distinction is the snarl of Mandy himself. He sounds like a pissed off Chris Boltendahl, the singer for Grave Digger! The music is basic, catchy and rhythmic. Technicality and layering are abandoned in favour of punch effectiveness. The result is an alloy made of part Manowar and part W.A.S.P. The band has much to say lyrically too. The lyrics are easy to follow and make several good points. Reading between the lines is recommended too. Sadly, the band has deemed it appropriate to allow two techno remixes to be tagged onto the end of the album. Too bad, for they end the album on a sour note. Otherwise, When God Turned Away should appeal to fans of the US metal sound to which WWIII belongs.
Collectors should note the new cover adorning the North American edition of the CD which sets it apart from the original European edition. - Ali "The Metallian
