Reviews ZIMMERS HOLE - WHILE YOU WERE SHOUTING AT THE DEVIL... - CENTURY MEDIA
Zimmers Hole is the band of Strapping Young Lad’s guitarist Jed Simon and bassist Byron Stroud who have recruited Gene Hoglan of the same and managed to recreate the SYL sound rather faithfully. Entitled While You Were Shouting At The Devil... We Were In League With Satan this is a musically accomplished album with a singer who can hit both low and high notes, solid thrashing gallops of guitar, serious short bursts of soloing, strong bass and Hoglan’s always competent double bass. If one didn’t know it already Zimmers Hole is a parody band poking fun at metal, Motley Crüe, glam, Metallica and more. Here is the problem: when your side-project becomes your main band and you sign to a business-oriented label how are you going to maintain the joke? Zimmers Hole is a serious and full-time entity now seemingly, but trying to get away with poking fun at itself and of its ecosystem. Will it fly? The music is completely acceptable, hard and well produced and arranged. SYL fans will love it, as will most thrashers and some extreme death metal fans. Featuring Deathklok or calling a song Hair Doesn’t Grow On Steel - not to mention the dozen or so self-deprecating lyrical jabs - put pure sarcasm back into the proceedings, but which is it with the band? Is it Deathklok or is it Dark Angel? What happens when they meet? Will fans get enough of either or love the balance?
The listener will be picking up on the barrage of borrowed riffs and lyrics as he ponders the questions. - Ali “The Metallian”
