NOTHING SACRED – HOLLYWOOD STRIPHOUNDS
This is a 2010 CD with a 1988 sound, production and image, which invariably means great rocking music, hot looking guys with long hair and a whole lotta attitude. Nothing Sacred welcomes you to the jungle with four songs of oozing sleazy glam metal. The band is comprised of Kelly Mikals (a guy – vocals), Nikolazzi and Crash Cortez (aliases and guitars), Danny Demure (seriously and bass) and skin banger Danny Burkholder. The vocals are a siren and the music drives and pounds and does not skimp on the heavy riffs. Yet, this is a good fun disc; the type you wish you would see/hear more of, but has sadly been forsaken in favour of trash. That’s right boys and girls the energy and attitude, the music, the vcoals and the hair. What else does one need? More songs. That’s what. http://www.nothingsacredofficial.com or e-mail info@nothingsacredofficial.com. – Sheila Wes Det Honey For Christ - The Cruelty Of Great Expectations

HONEY FOR CHRIST - THE CRUELTY OF GREAT EXPECTATIONS
The Northern Irish band has issued the disc courtesy of Rundown Records (which is reminiscent of labels like 1 More Flop Records and Wrong Again Records - remember them?), but the disc is legitimately a demo given how Rundown is a dedicated imprint for the band and owned by the group's management. The latest by the band is quite mature and serious metal. Moreover, the material is unusual in this day and age of fancy, frills and extremes of one way or the other. Honey For Christ is hard rock and heavy metal straightforward, the singer is flat yet strong and barely raises a fuss either way. The songs are catchy and mixed around the vocals. Oddly, what the band does not sound like is names and genres the biography ascribes. There is little evidence here, thankfully, that HFC is gothic or sounds like Anathema or My Dying Bride. And, of course, that is a good thing. Simply having sombre or depressed lyrics does not make a band "gothic" for instance. The band is a modern take on standard British heavy metal. Remember Chariot, for instance?
The trio has been around for 15 years now and has had a great deal of time to think. That might explain the profoundness of the disc title. The band can be tracked through www.rundownrecords.co.uk or by e-mailing info@honeyforchrist.com. - Ali "The Metallian"

SEKS - HARDER THAN YOU
Once upon a time Los Angeles and the United States were the hotbeds of glam metal. Nowadays, things seem the other way around. SEKS from Norway is led by an American, Rock Hart, transplanted from Los Angeles to Norway in order to find glam musicians!
This is a proud glam band with the sound and gorgeous long hair that goes with it. Four of these gents look darn gosh sexy. The phrasing and the metre is sometimes odd and the rhythm guitar really quiet, but SEKS is sure a hoot ion this era of ugliness and dullness. Things start hard and heavy with Rich Girl. On The Inside has weird vocals that are loud and stout. Something To Believe In is Motley circa Theater Of Pain. Not my fave Crue period for sure. This song is synthesized. Hangin’ On is the obligatory slow song. It is not only slow, but also weak. Charlemagne is a European king from 1,200 years ago for whom the band has affection. He is all over the disc, biography and insert. The song has a heavy riff. My personal favourite song here, which the band has 13, is next. Kiss might ‘Lick It Up,’ but SEKS does one better and has ‘Lick You Up.’ This is an ace of a song that has a kicking rhythm and is solid kewlness. A song like Get Out Now makes this girl wonder if the band is serious. The lyrics are more like a glam parody, you know! Rock Me is another good one with more than a nod to Ratt. The song is rocking heavy and has some of the best guitars anywhere in the 2011 glam universe. Not Far From Shallow Water is like the title says. It is poppy, light and the twinkle of the bells magnify the lack of a real song. The drums take centre stage. Never mind, there is more than enough here to make it all worthwhile.
Here is an oddly contradictory statement from the band’s biography: “SEKS wants to come and conquer YOUR city! Contact SEKS if you can bring them to your city!” Find the band’s site at http://www.seksband.com or write them at band@seksband.com. - Sheila Wes Det

DETONATION – REPRISAL
Dutch death metal band Detonation has gone from being a signed band and releasing albums to issuing demos courtesy of Osmose production, which apparently has dropped the act. More accurately, the label opted to not re-sign the band. Either way, lucky for us, the group has opted to not throw in the towel and has issued this full-length demo disc and the material is superlative. Reprisal is top-notch metal that handily beats the band’s last label release.
The album is made up of eight relatively short and to-the-point songs that exude speed and cutting savagery. The vocals are scratchy and aggressive, while the music mostly fast to super fast invariably consecrated with a fantastic sound. Yet, what hits one the most about Detonation anno 2011 is the band’s tightness. Detonation metal is so tight and the arrangements so coordinated that the band might as well have rehearsed these songs all their lives. Koen Romeijn vocals were already mentioned, but his, Mike’s and Danny’s guitars are also superlative. The guitars go at it in serious deathly style until Absentia Mentis where they begin to introduce dreamy sequence to the repertoire. Listen for the Megadeth (circa R.I.P.) copycat riffing and sound on Feeding On The Madness first though. Above all, drummer Van Der Plicht is a machine. His departure from the band is disappointing. His organized chaos is a plus for this death metal band.
Reprisal needs support. This band is clearly worthy of a deal and wider exposure. Now, let us figure out what way is up and what is down for the band’s cover artwork. Find the band at www.detonation.nl or e-mail them at info.detonation@gmail.com. - Ali “The Metallian”
