WOLFSHADE - POINT OF NO RETURN
Wolfshade is a new name and band to me. Looking at their website we know the act has several independent full-lengths to its name and has a ‘wolf man’ mascot associated with it. Cool. Also the website adds this (which I love): “due to the ignorance of audience and gigs organizators they decided to stop touring and to go as a studio band.” Not shying away from saying what they think, eh?
Wolfshaders are three musicians setting up a mid-paced hard rock with a semi-capable singer who compensates for the lack of a band profile with resentment and intransigence. There is an intro and a synthesised sound to start, but these gentlemen are a no-frills meat and potato band with downcast lyrics. There is a decent bass presence and a singer who is his own man. He did remind this writer of U2’s Bono on the title track. He didn’t mean it though. Don’t be mad at him. This type of bare bones frank hard rock is a tough sell in a world focused on goth pop singers pretending to be metal. The media is focusing on extracurricular activities of members and not music.
The Night Of Living Deads is a plural title and good song that dishes an element of danger. It stands out as much as anything on Point Of No Return does. Wherever You May Roam is a slow song that had me thinking White Lion. Heart Of The Brave had me thinking of Hammerfall, but it is not that. It’s another slow one too with a tasty lead guitar that could have come from Cinderella or Alaska. The trio is not listing a drummer currently. The drum sound is half decent for a drum machine. TENEBRAE AETERNUM - FOR I WAS THE SNAKE
They demand darkness and sterility when they listen to music on Neptune. One of their favourites is Tenebrae Aeternum. They have serious tastes over there because this band encompasses the brutality and ferociousness of a barren planet with the enchanting beauty of darkness and thick gaseous soil. For I Was The Snake offers both: sledgehammer heaviness and atmosphere full of odium.
The music is an explosive march of metal that offers both hidden and not-so-hidden harmonies everywhere. It is mostly rhythmic and has growling and mystical vocals. That's called From Flesh To Ashes. The title track is a litany of doom. It has a hypnotic effect and depraved worshipful vocals. Still speed is back on the menu quickly. This is surprising for a solo endeavour. There is rhythm, backing tracks, multiple vocals and more. Creation Of Creators is tight and more technical. It’s crackling with power, but wait, what’s that? Some Metallica (yecch) riffing unfortunately comes out of nowhere. At least it's the older stuff not the newer/crappier stuff. As if to shove all the crud at the same time it makes sense that they add some synthesiser in the background too. Still, the song reverts to its tight hyperspeed soon. Veil Of Obsidian is a cool title. It is more ambient and less to do with structure or song and more about effects and overdubs on a plane of distorted guitar really. Golden Ornaments comes back with those rhythmic drums again. Think slow to mid-paced haunting atmosphere on a cascading heavy guitar rhythm.
This is top-shelf stuff for fans of Mgła, early Satyricon and Netherdom. Metallica fans, I hope you didn’t get your hopes up. Sorry, it is entirely too serious and heavy for you. This is officially short of a full-length at 29 minutes, but the songs deliver lots of good stuff in that almost thirty minutes. They have much better tastes on Neptune than back here on Earth where cretins are dabbling in stupidity and revelling in ignorance. - Anna Tergel
